Bringing Fifi or Fido? Traveling with pets can be
fun or challenging, so be prepared!

It can be great if you start pre-planning early, and consider all of
your options.
I am often asked if it would be okay to bring the pet member of the
family, and in many instances the answer is yes!
There is a lot to consider when you make the decision to bring your
friend, and make the decision for him or her that it would be fun,
and it can be. There is work involved though.
First of all, hopefully Fido is housebroken, doesn't suffer
separation anxiety when in a new environment, and is not a chewer.
Otherwise your vacation may cost more than you planned to spend.
Some pets are happy as can be at home, but not so out on the road in
new living arrangements. Does your pet have travel experience? Do
you know how he will react to a new environment?
Fifi may not bark in familiar territory, but may feel lost when left
at the vacation home even for short periods of time. When you decide
to eat out, would you either consider a restaurant with outdoor
dining that is able to accept a pet leashed at the table, or to
leave your pet in the car; weather permitting of course. Or, if your
Fifi is crate trained, maybe she would be happier with a familiar
blanket or toy to stay in for a few hours. I have on occasion had to
call vacationers back to a house due to incessant barking. On the
beach, homes are very close together, so it doesn't take much to
annoy the neighbors in a residential beach community. A pet hotel or
sitter may be a better option in this case, either in the vacation
area, or left at home to be in familiar surroundings.
Now that you have considered the possible negative consequences,
here are tips to make the trip as enjoyable for Fido. If your pet is
just as happy to be included, then time to start your search for a
"pet-friendly" location that is suitable for all family memebers.
When requesting information, it is important that you indicate that
you would like to bring your pet. Include the breed, size and age of
your pet. This way, you will know right away what the extra cost is
to include your pet, and that the pet is a good fit for the property
you are considering.
Most pet friendly vacation rental owners charge an extra cleaning
fee, which is very fair, for a pet cleaning, carpet shampoo, hair
removal. They will also usually increase the refundable security
deposit.

Another consideration: We have many owners that accept pets, but in
the beach areas, most beaches do not allow pets on them,
particularly during the summer months. There are a few, and within a
short distance you could take your pet to a day at the beach, but if
you plan to spend alot of time sunning or activities on the beach,
where will your pet be during this time?
If it is still worth bringing Fifi, visit your favorite online or
local pet store for the supplies that you will need to travel,
keeping Fido happy, comfortable and safe on the trip and when you
reach your desired destination.
Planning: Get your pet ready by making short trips around the
neighborhood if he is not used to going out of the yard. Allow him
to spend time in the pet carrier or crate with a few favorite things
for comfort.
Travel Tote: Prepare a tote to include doggie clean-up bags and
supplies, his vet's contact information, pet records, his favorite
bed, a first-aid kit, travel bowls and his favorite toys.
Make list of what you will need once you get there. All shots should
be up to date, and don't forget to include your cell# on his tags in
case he gets lost. Ask your vet about medication for car or air
sickness if Fifi is prone to motion sickness.
If travelling by air, be sure to make the arrangements early. Some
airlines don't accept pets, and those that do, limit according to
available space. When purchasing a carrier, be sure that it is
strong enough and airline compliant. note: pets travelling to Hawaii
or some European countries must go through a quarantine period.
Check to be sure that your pet is able to travel to your
destination, or what the requirements are.
Plan lots of walks and outings! Fifi is probably anxious and you
want to prevent this by providing lots of water, and exercise.

walking or jogging. We also have year-round great weather, so it is
not difficult to get out with Fido and enjoy the family trip.

A nice, low key spot of sand to let your dog run off-leash Seasonal,
September to June! Del Mar. Parking is also at a premium, and
parking tickets flow freely in Del Mar. Camino del Mar at Via de la
Valle, Del Mar.
